Best of 2012

Super late on my top 5's for the year of 2012.  Partly because 2012 can go to hell.  Partly because I am lazy. Though 2012 was a year I quickly want to forget, it was a gd great year in music.  That said, movies pretty much blew - not sure I can even do a top 5 of those...here we go.

Top 10 Songs -

(Song titles are linked to videos of the track)

1. February Seven - Avett Brothers - Easily my favorite song of 2012. A simple, 'I messed up, gd I realize it now' type of song.  Probably have played this song no less than 500 since the album came out in November

2. Emmylou - First Aid Kit  - The sweetest song of 2012.  Put it on, it will make you happy

3. For a Fool - The Shins - Oh the Shins finally decide to come back.  The album is good, not great like their  others, but this songs gets me every time.

4. Birmingham - Shovels and Rope - Charleston kids done good.  Catchiest indie song of 2012 without question.  They are blowing up and I am proud of them.

5. Life - Avett Brothers - My #2 off the "Carpenter' album.  Just a gd beautiful song.  This is the live version from the NYE show Allorto and I went to.  It sounds awful, but it put me on cloud fucking nine live.

6. Revelation Blues - Tallest Man on Earth - Once a man told me Kristian Matsson is 'sassy'...ha, if he is he doesnt show it in his lyrics and writing. Though pompous at times, the brother can write a good song.  This was my favorite off an incredible album.

7. Myth - Beach House - Dark, a little weird, and nearly perfect.

8. Dead Sea - The Lumineers - Where did these cats come from?  If they could only learn to add another minute to their songs. Super simple songs, including this track, but impossible not to singalong to.

9. The Boxer - Mumford & Sons - Simon and Garfunkel is pretty much 'un-coverable' in my book.  They are too good and too hard to match, much less make better or do their material justice.  Somehow Mumford did that with their "boxer" cover. Brilliant

10. Let's Go Home - Best Coast - This version is live and a bit dicey, but I love the studio recording.  My summer song for 2012.

Top 5 Radio Tracks:

(These songs were my favorite that hit mainstream radio-waves)

1. We Are Young - Fun. - Easily the best pop song of 2012. It got played out and I still love this song.  Anthem for years to come I think

2. Hold On - Alabama Shakes - Not sure I have ever seen a band go from Indie to top 30 so fast. Great song. Great voice.

3. I Will Wait - Mumford & Sons - Mumford and Avetts are bringing the banjo to pop music. I like it

4. Ho Hey - Lumineers - So simple, middle schoolers were calling in requests and dedications to this song.  Impossible not to sing along.

5. Hero - Family of the Year - More folk in the top 40.

Top 5 Albums

1. Carpenter - Avett Brothers - Super high expectations and my dogs met them.  Cant tell you how much I love this album.

2. Bloom - Beach House - This is the most seamless album of 2012.  Going on a road-trip? Put this album in and let it roll through.  This album makes you think....hard

3. There's No Leaving Now - Tallest Man on Earth - Simple shit really, but one gd good album.

4. The Lion's Roar - First Aid Kit - Read great reviews on these 2 ladies, but Kenny Hinely finally made me listen to them and I am indebted to him for it.  This girls have helped fill my current "waiting for the next Camera Obscura album" void.  If you like She & Him, Camera Obscura, Slow Club, then download this.

5. Celebration Rock - Japandroids - Basically I listened to a lot of pussy music in 2012 as you can tell, but these guys were there to turn it up a bit for me.  Great Rock album from beginning to end.  Definitely would have played these guys on my radio show back at Clemson.

Honorable Mentions: Everest, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Best Coast, Lumineers, Mumford & Sons

Top 5 Movies

1. Safety Not Guaranteed - She was already creeping up my top celebrity crush list, but after this movie Aubrey Plaza will be in the top 5.  Quirky, smart, and funny flick - Give it a shot.

2. Beasts of the Southern Wild - If you do not want a baby girl after watching this movie and Quvenzahne Wallis' performance then you are a cold-blooded weirdo.  Her big hair and white boots can't help but make you pull for her.

3. Argo - My dog Ben Affleck does it again.  No idea how he didn't get nominated for best director by the Academy, but he should have.  Tense, but free flowing movie....Seems as though they did a decent job of sticking to the true story as well...John Goodman is quietly great in it too...

4. Moonrise Kingdom - Wes Anderson...Obviously I have to put it in the top 5.

5. The Dark Knight Rises - Very good finale to the Chris Nolan Trilogy.  I am going to miss the daylights out of him and Christian Bale working together.  I love Gordon-Levitt but I don't want any 'Robin' movies....just saying.

Top 4 Celeb Crushes

1. Rashida Jones - She is still funny as hell on Parks & Rec, plus she is writing movies now (need to see Celeste and Jesse Forever)....But bar-none, not even remotely close, Rashida is my #1 girl.

2. Alex Morgan - Slamming hot soccer player that is prettier without makeup on than with...I mean, its pretty simple.

3.  Taylor Swift - I get lots of flack for this one...what can I say I have a soft spot for the youngin'.  I love me some T-Swift....Her cheesy ass love songs have at least one guy singing along to them....(that would be me)

4. Jessica Chastain - A pretty red-head is an unstoppable force...My girl Jessica Chastain had one helluva year with 'Lawless' and now 'Zero Dark Thirty.'

5. Aubrey Plaza - Dead pan hottie

So again, so long shitty-ass 2012 and welcome 2013....Going to be a good one...maybe...probably no...whatevs....
